Mission Trips

The following is a list of past mission trips organized by First Reformed Church. To learn more about upcoming mission opportunities please contact the church office or the Missions Committee.

Texas Work Trip -

In February of 2010 and 2011 groups from First Reformed Church joined missionaries Bruce and Laurie Hawley in the Gulf Coast of Texas to help rebuild homes and lives from the devastating effects of multiple hurricaines. The mission teams spent time working on construction projects, listening to the stories of homeowners, and learning about the local culture. This weeklong trip is a great opportunity for those who would like to serve on a very affordable short term trip.

Malawi - Africa

Working with RCA Mission Partners, Larry and Linda McAuley, First Reformed Church has sent four different mission teams to Malawi to help with community development through the building of new schools in rural villages. Malawi is a small landlocked country located in the southeast corner of Africa. Mission teams travel for two weeks to help partner with a local village to build a school building for preschool age children.

Due to the significant impact of HIV/AIDS on the populations of many African countries, many young children are growing up without parents as orphans. This problem creates significant challenges for many African nations including Malawi. Insted of building orphanages to house these children, it is the custom in Malawi for family members and friends to welcome these children into their homes. This places a significant financial strain on many families. By building preschools for toddler aged children, many orphans now receive proper childcare and introductory schooling throughout the year. This significantly increases their chances of success in school and also provides many kids with their only meal of the day.

First Reformed Church will continue to work with RCA mission partners in Malawi to build schools for young children and help bring hope to many children and families. The next trip is being planned for the summer of 2012.
